St. George the Great Martyr Orthodox Church is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America, initially set up in 1979 as a mission. We are the only Orthodox parish in the entire Rio Grande Valley and we welcome Orthodox Christians of all backgrounds. Indeed, we are a very diverse community, of converts of several ethnic backgrounds (from Mexico, Canada, southern America, Asia, etc.) and also of "cradle Orthodox" who are Greeks, Palestinians, Romanians, Russians, Ukrainians, Turks, etc. Our services are mostly in English, although certain prayers are said in the many second languages of our parish members--Spanish, Greek, Arabic, Romanian, Slavonic, etc.

For more information about us (our history, our clergy, etc.) please see "our parish" header.

Instructions on our worship for the foreseeable future - 07/13/24
Category: Parish News
Last updated: 2024-07-13 21:13:28

For the foreseeable future, after each sermon, Fr. Silviu will speak on our worship, especially on things we should all know: what happens during our services (the things unseen), what is the significance of what we do, what are the times when we cannot sit under any circumstances, when we kneel, when we cross ourselves, when we bow our heads, etc. This knowledge is needed in order for us to develop a good local liturgical tradition, in harmony with the larger Orthodox world.
